What to ask before works begin!

HOW DO I KNOW MY TRADESMAN IS LICENSED

  • Ask the person that comes to do the quote if he/she the one that will be doing your work, if he is ask to look at his/her license
  • Does the license have a company name or the tradesman's name? Record the number on the license and do a license check on the NSW Department of Fair Trading website or ring them on 133220.
  • If it is a company license ask who will be doing the actual work and get their license number and check as above.
  • A license check will show up the categories that tradesman is able to do such as Plumbing, Roof plumbing etc and it will show if there is any limitations to the license such as IF IT IS CANCELLED, SUSPENDED OR THEY ARE UNABLE TO CONTRACT WITH CONSUMERS this is a massive red flag!

Examples of shoddy and unsightly works done by others (unskilled) that we have fixed. Only deal with licensed tradesmen!

What are some things I need to ask when I get a quote?

Ask questions! This is the time to get answers, so you can make sure you choose a tradesman you feel comfortable letting into your home and doing your work. If you want reassurance of certain changes of details of your job get them to write it on your quote!

  • Are they Licensed? More on this is below
  • Ask for their ABN number and check it up on the ABN Lookup website
  • Are they insured? Ask them to show you proof of their public liability insurance.
  • If it is a job $20,000 or over inclusive of materials and labour do they have home warranty insurance? ask NSW department of fair trading about this.
  • How long have they been in the industry or trading?
  • Do they have references?
  • What warranties are there?
  • If I choose you, when could you start? How long will it take for my job to be completed?
  • Will you remove the old hot water system for me?
  • What will the materials be? In the case of external hot water pipes, will the lagging be UV protected?

Unskilled workers not only could cost you more in the long run but they are hurting the reputation of the plumbing industry.  It is important that if you are paying for a tradesman that you are getting a tradesman, as a consumer you should be getting what you are spending your hard earned money on, remember why should you sign up for a tradesman and not get a tradesman doing your work then pay the business tradesman money, IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE DOES IT! If you wanted a labourer you would hire a labourer RIGHT!
